Listening In on Everyone

Seems harmless enough, right?

Last week, the class read an article about how the Glendale school district uses a service known as Geo Listening.  This service monitors what students say outside of school on the internet.  Geo Listening monitors what students do by searching for all public posts made by the students of the school.  According to the passage that we read, most students are displeased with Geo Listening and view it as a violation of their privacy.  While the students take it as a violation of their rights, the administrative staff of the school have their own reasons for implementing such a system.  Some of these reasons include stopping cyberbullying and preventing drug usage.  In spite of these benefits, I personally believe that the school was unjustified in using Geo Listening.  I believe this because in my opinion, everyone is entitled to a certain level of privacy, especially when not in school, and that Geo Listening violates that privacy.
         If this system was implemented at San Ramon Valley High School, many people would likely be punished for their actions outside of school.  Plenty of bad things go on outside of school, and many would be held accountable for their actions.  Examples of these bad things include drug use, bullying, and various other illegal activities.  If the school implemented Geo Listening, many students would be quite angered with this.  The idea of all your posts on the internet being monitored is too much for many people to handle.  Even a person with little or nothing to hide would likely be unhappy with having their posts constantly monitored.  While these concerns are valid, Geo Listening would also bring benefits with it, including less cyber bullying and illegal activities from the students.
